Your seat is the foundation of everything you do in the saddle. Whether you’re learning to trot or mastering a trail ride, a secure and balanced seat helps you stay in sync with your horse—and out of their way.
In this post, we’ll show you how to discover that “sweet spot” in the saddle where you’re balanced, confident, and moving in harmony with your horse’s walk.
🪑 Step-by-Step: Building Your Balanced Seat
1. Start Before You Move
Sit in the saddle with your horse at a halt. Do a posture check:
✅ Shoulders over hips
✅ Heels under your body
✅ Hands soft and level
✅ Eyes looking ahead
2. Engage Your Core
No slouching, no gripping. Engage your abdominal muscles to sit tall and strong without stiffness. You should feel stable, not locked.
3. Drop Your Stirrups (Optional Step)
Want to really feel your seat? Drop your stirrups for a minute or two. Let your thighs wrap naturally, and let your hips follow the swing of your horse’s back as they walk.
4. Follow the Motion
As your horse walks, your seat should move like a pendulum—not bounce or resist. Imagine your hips moving in a gentle figure-eight.
5. Regain and Re-check
Pick up your stirrups and check your alignment again. Did anything shift? Reset and try again.
💡 Tips for Success
-
Breathe deeply. Relaxed breath = relaxed seat.
-
Eyes up. Looking down shifts your weight forward.
-
Don’t grip. Your legs should rest, not cling.
🎯 Student Challenge
Can you ride the full short side of the arena at the walk—with no stirrups—without losing your posture or balance?
Try it three times in a row, breathing deeply and staying centered.
